5 Ways I Take Education Anywhere

My duties as AJU Technology Coordinator require me to access myClassroom frequently and with very little notice. Additionally, I teach a few web design classes and am a student in a media writing class, so I have experienced AJU from many different angles.

Living by our mantra allows me to share with you five ways that I have been able to “Take Education Anywhere.”

1. Thanksgiving Dessert: As an instructor in CS120, one of my students turned in some assignments the day before Thanksgiving. I was going to be spending the entire weekend at my parents’ house, but I didn’t want to make the student wait until Monday to receive feedback. So - after I was thoroughly stuffed with my mother’s famous sweet potato casserole - I perched myself in front of the computer in her spare room and graded my student’s work. (Good news: She got an A!)

2. Seventh Inning Stretch: While watching a friend’s son play a Little League game, my phone rang with  - a student having trouble in myClassroom. There was no computer in sight, so what could I do? I simply pulled out my Blackberry, logged into myClassroom and answered the student’s question, all within the span of a few batters.

3. Latte Learning: I love my house, but there are times when it isn’t the easiest place to concentrate. I have a dog that wants to play 24/7, a garden that always wants attention, and plenty of other personal distractions. Luckily for me, all I need is a wi-fi signal, and I am completing assignments for my media writing class in the Big Mountain Coffee Shop in Helena, AL. There, it’s just me, myClassroom, and a great cup of coffee.

4. Beach Teaching: From time to time, we spend the weekend at my aunt’s beach condo in Pensacola, FL. The view is great from her seventh floor balcony and I feel at peace when I sit there and watch the waves roll in. What a great place to relax and give some feedback to my web design students. One problem: there is no internet connection in the condo. Luckily, I borrowed a Sprint Wireless Internet Card from someone, and in a few minutes time, answered all my students’ questions before I needed to reapply suntan lotion.

5. Airline Answers: Recently, I found myself at an airport getting ready to taxi down the runway, when I received an email from a student who had forgotten his password. The flight attendant was making her way down the aisle to request that everyone “put away all electronic devices.” A passenger stopped her to ask a question, and that gave me the time to login to myClassroom and take care of the student’s password situation. By the time she got to my seat, I had just emailed the student to tell them they could log back in.
