Ideas for Father's Day
Father’s day is just around the corner...when I was younger, my brothers and I used to make our dad a pot of coffee (sometimes a little thick, other times watery) and his favorite Pillsbury cinnamon buns for breakfast.
After college, I decided to stay where I went to school and not move back to my home state; the impact of this decision didn’t really hit me until the first holiday away from family. Being 'Daddy’s Little Girl,' I always made sure that I sent my father a card (and called) on Father’s Day (and other special occasions) to let him know how much I appreciate him and how I wished I were there to have coffee and cinnamon buns with him.
While standing in the card aisle this week at the local grocery store trying to find “the card” that says it “All”, it dawned on me: how do children of deployed dads celebrate Father’s Day? Recently I read an article on www.milspouse.com which offered some good ideas for state-side spouses and children to cheer their deployed loved one on Father’s Day. Cards and letters are always good, but one thing I thought was neat-o was the “Family Gram,” a short (40-word) video message that families put together and send overseas just to say hi and send their love.
Another cool idea in using video streams would be to set up webcams if possible, providing interaction between the two sides so that a conversation can be developed. I just found this article so helpful and thought that it would be good to share with everyone! There are a few more ideas and stories of what people have done to send loved ones messages; check it out at: http://www.milspouse.com/fathers-day-on-deployment.aspx
Just curious: I would love to know what you guys have done - or are planning to do - for your loved one who's deployed overseas this Father’s Day!
Have a great weekend and a HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
