Christmas Cheers & Jeers
OK, it’s the time of year to celebrate our families and reflect on the year that has been 2008.
With that in mind, I’ve prepared my Christmas version of Cheers & Jeers…..
Merry Christmas….to the American Worker. It’s been a tough year for you. Two million of you have lost your jobs, and more cuts are on the way….but hang in there; you are the reason why America is a great country – 25% of the world output with only 5% of the population…you are the best!
Bah Humbug…to the ‘big three’ automakers. Shame on you for expecting the American taxpayer to bail you out. You’ve refused to address your biggest problems and only look to the government for protection. All you need to do is look to the South to see how the other successful American auto companies employing American workers are doing…they may take the name Hyundai or Mercedes – but those are American plants producing American made cars! If you want a bailout, I suggest going the route of the big airlines…Chapter 11. Most of the major airlines went through it, yet they are still flying…so stop scaring everyone by claiming you’ll go out of business.
Merry Christmas….to the American Home Owner. Like the American Worker, you too have had a tough year - falling home values, rising mortgage rates, balloon payments, foreclosures and an overall depressed market. Stay focused, America is still the land of opportunity and to own a home and raise your family is still the dream you can live. 2009 will be better.
Bah Humbug…to the banks, financial institutions and credit card companies…$750 billion bailout and you are raising fees? $750 billion and you triple our credit card rates? C’mon, you must think we are not paying attention. We will remember how you treated us and will let our market power tell you how we really feel...if you made the decision to raise our rates, you might want to polish up that resume....
Merry Christmas…to the American Consumer. Despite all the gloom and doom, you are still spending. You are still celebrating Christmas. You are still taking care of your loved ones. Ultimately it is you, the consumer, that will lead us out of this recession.
Bah Humbug…to that guy who threw the shoes at President Bush. C’mon, that’s the President of the United States. Even if you don’t like him or his policies, you need to show respect for the position. Shame on you for being so naïve and showing a lack of respect for democracy. By throwing those shoes at the President, you threw shoes at every American, at every person living in a free democracy.
Merry Christmas...to the American Voter. Yes, that is the beauty of a democracy. The American people were not happy with the leadership in Washington and voted for a change. We don’t throw shoes, we vote! I look forward to President Elect Obama and his new leadership team. Let’s make sure America is on that Shining Hill again.
Bah Humbug...to college presidents who raise tuition. The greatness of America over the last 100 years has been our education. We need to lower the cost, provide more access and make America even stronger. Stop looking to the government to bail you out and figure out a way to deliver high quality education at the lowest possible price….we’ve already done that at Andrew Jackson University and are more than willing to teach you how. Let’s Take Education Anywhere!
Merry Christmas...to the American Student. You keep plugging, you keep learning, you keep getting good grades and graduating. You are the future of this country, and as a member of faculty of both Andrew Jackson University and San Jose State University, I am always humbled by how impressive my students are…you amaze me.
Bah Humbug...to that guy who bilked $50 Billion with that hedge fund Ponzi scheme…wow. Lesson to all of us: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is…and you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people...how does that go again?
Merry Christmas…to the American Soldier. You keep my family safe and our country strong. God bless you and your families for the sacrifice you make for our liberty!
And Merry Christmas...to my family and friends...to the students, faculty and staff of AJU...and Merry Christmas to the World. God bless everyone and may 2009 be best year ever!
Peace,
Don Kassner

Merry Christmas Don! I have enjoyed your economics mini-classes very much. I said to John Jr. "WOW! Is this the kid I remember sweeping parking lots at night? Congratulations, CEO, husband, father. How quickly time goes by. May you and yours have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
