The problem with free online courses



Yesterday it was revealed that the Obama administration plans to develop and offer free online general education courses through the nation's community college system.  While we applaud the initiative, the concern is pedagogical.   Will these courses include the necessary faculty interaction with learners?     This announcement is timely given a study released by the U.S. Department of Education that compares the quality of online education with traditional brick and mortar classes.   In today's Educate America, Don Kassner tackles this subject and concludes:  "Education should be measured by how much is learned, not by how much is paid."
